Why Intruder Alarm Maintenance Is Not Optional
Under BS9263, monitored Grade 2 systems require a minimum of one maintenance visit per year. Grade 3 and above require two. Police forces require current maintenance certification as a condition of retaining a police URN — and most commercial insurers require evidence of maintained, SSAIB-certified systems as a condition of policy. A lapsed maintenance certificate can result in loss of police response and insurance disputes following a break-in.
Legal requirements
Monitored intruder alarm systems require regular maintenance as a condition of insurance and police response. Under BS9263, Grade 2 systems require a minimum of one maintenance visit per year; Grade 3 and above require two. Police forces also require evidence of current maintenance to retain a URN. FAQs
Maintenance questions
At least once a year for bells-only systems, and usually twice a year for monitored systems. We remind you when a service is due and record every visit.
Yes. We inspect it, fix anything that doesn't meet the standard and, where it qualifies, transfer the police URN to us.
For intruder alarms, police write to warn you after two false calls in 12 months and withdraw response after three. For hold-up alarms, response is withdrawn after two. Getting it back needs the cause fixed and 90 days without false calls.
