Why Fire Alarm False Alarms Happen

False alarms are almost always caused by the wrong detector in the wrong environment, poor detector placement, sensitivity drift from accumulated contamination, or a system that hasn't been reconfigured following a change in building use. NPCC Unwanted Fire Signals Policy

Under the National Police Chiefs' Council Unwanted Fire Signals policy, premises with persistent false alarms can have automatic fire brigade attendance withdrawn. Once response is removed, reinstatement requires a formal application and evidence that the root cause has been identified and resolved.
