Proprietary systems use manufacturer-specific protocols that lock you into one supplier regardless of price or service quality. SPS Technical installs open protocol systems as standard — meaning you're never locked in, and any competent BAFE-accredited contractor can maintain your system. When taking over existing systems, we audit whether the system is open or proprietary and advise on migration options.
BS 5839 System Categories — Life and Property Protection
BS 5839 classifies fire alarm systems by their protection objective. Category L systems protect life through early warning to occupants. Category P systems protect property by detecting fire early enough to trigger ARC response before the building is seriously damaged. Most commercial premises require a combination of both — the appropriate categories are determined by the fire risk assessment, which SPS Technical reviews during the site survey.

Category L — Life protection
Protecting occupants through early warning

FAQs
Installation questions
It depends on your fire risk assessment. L categories protect life (L1 is the highest), P categories protect property and M is a manual system with call points only. We agree the category with you at survey before anything is designed.
A conventional system tells you which zone an alarm came from. An addressable system tells you the exact device, which makes faults and false alarms quicker to find. Larger or more complex buildings usually suit addressable.
A standard system should run for at least 24 hours on standby and then sound the alarm for 30 minutes on battery power. We calculate battery size as part of every design.
Design, installation, commissioning and acceptance certificates, as-fitted drawings with a zone chart, a logbook and a maintenance certificate after each service. If you can't find yours, a takeover audit is the place to start.
