About this tool

Ask the Standards Library is a free question-and-answer tool from SPS Technical. It answers questions about UK fire and security standards and the related law, such as BS 5839-1:2025 fire alarm servicing (at least every six months), the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, PD 6662 and BS 9263 for intruder alarms, NPCC police response rules, BS EN IEC 62676-4 and BS 8418 for CCTV, BS EN 60839-11-1 and BS 7273-4 for access control, and UK GDPR for CCTV. Answers come only from the SPS Technical standards library, list the standards and official sources used, and say when a question needs an engineer. Editions and links are checked regularly by the SPS Technical team. It gives general guidance, not advice for a specific building.

Designed for Responsible Persons, facilities managers, estates teams, landlords, consultants and business owners. SPS Technical provides commercial fire and security design, installation, maintenance and monitoring across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the Humber.

Answers are produced automatically from the SPS Technical standards library and are general guidance only, not legal or compliance advice for a specific building. Always check the quoted source, and ask a competent engineer or your fire risk assessor before acting.

This tool provides an initial indication only. Results are based on the information you have provided and recognised industry standards. They are not a substitute for a site-specific technical assessment, insurer advice or formal compliance review. Maintenance requirements may vary depending on system type, site conditions, monitoring arrangements, certification status and insurer requirements. SPS Technical can confirm the correct requirements following a review of your system.

What You Can Ask

Fire alarms: servicing intervals, weekly tests, logbooks, what changed in BS 5839-1:2025, fire alarms in flats and HMOs, and your duties under the Fire Safety Order 2005.

Intruder alarms: security grades under PD 6662, how often to service under BS 9263, police response, URNs and false alarm limits.

CCTV: image detail for identifying people under BS EN IEC 62676-4, monitored CCTV under BS 8418, signs, retention and subject access requests under UK GDPR.

Access control: security grades under BS EN 60839-11-1 and releasing locked doors in a fire under BS 7273-4.

How the Answers Work

When you ask a question, the tool finds the most relevant parts of our standards library and writes a short answer using only that material. It does not search the wider internet, so it won't repeat guesses or out-of-date advice from other sites.

Every answer lists its sources: our plain-English summary page and, where there is one, the official publisher such as BSI, legislation.gov.uk, GOV.UK or the ICO. If the library doesn't cover your question, the tool says so rather than guessing, and offers to put you in touch with an engineer.

The library itself is kept current. Official links are checked every week, and each standard's edition is checked against the publisher every month by the SPS Technical team.

Standards and Laws in the Library

The library has a plain-English summary page for each of these, plus a reference list of more than 60 standards, laws and official guidance documents in our resource library.

Ask the Standards Library FAQs

How often does a commercial fire alarm need servicing?

BS 5839-1:2025 recommends a service by a competent person at least every six months, plus a weekly test of a different manual call point, recorded in the logbook.

How often should an intruder alarm be serviced?

At least once a year for a bells-only system, and usually twice a year when it signals to an alarm receiving centre, under BS 9263:2016. Police-response systems must be maintained to keep their response.

Do I need CCTV signs at my business?

Yes. Under UK GDPR people must be told when they are being recorded, and clear signs are the usual way to do it. Signs should say who runs the system and how to contact them.

What CCTV image detail is needed to identify a person?

About 250 pixels per metre at the person, under BS EN IEC 62676-4:2025. Around 125 pixels per metre is enough to recognise someone you know.

Where do the answers come from?

Only from the SPS Technical standards library: our plain-English summaries of each standard, the official reference list and our published guides. Every answer lists its sources, with a link to our summary page and the official publisher.

Is this legal or compliance advice?

No. It is general guidance to help you understand the standards. What applies to your building depends on your fire risk assessment, system design and insurer, so ask a competent engineer before acting.

Can it quote the full British Standard?

No. British Standards are copyright of BSI, so the library holds summaries, not the documents themselves. For clause-level detail, buy the standard from BSI or ask one of our engineers.

How up to date is the library?

Official links are checked automatically every week, and every standard's edition is checked against the publisher every month by the SPS Technical team. Each summary page shows when it was last checked.
