About this tool
The SPS Technical System Health Self-Assessment is a free online tool for commercial organisations. It asks non-technical questions about fire alarms, intruder alarms, CCTV, access control, monitoring and maintenance to produce a broad health and compliance indication. It produces an indicative score and advisory notes. It does not certify compliance or replace a technical inspection.
Designed for facilities managers, estates teams, responsible persons and business owners. SPS Technical provides commercial fire and security design, installation, maintenance and monitoring across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the Humber.
Start System Health Self-Assessment
Answer a short set of questions about your security and fire systems to get a broad indication of your system health and compliance status. Select “I don’t know” where information is unavailable.
1. Are all of your security and fire systems maintained within their recommended service intervals?
2. Has a certificate of compliance or service report been issued following the last visit?
3. Are there any outstanding engineer recommendations or remedial actions from previous visits?
A 'Yes' here may indicate unresolved issues.
4. Is your system monitored by an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC)?
5. Has your alarm signalling path been confirmed as non-PSTN (e.g. IP, 4G or dual-path)?
If unsure, the PSTN Switch-Off Checker may help.
6. Has your system produced any false alarms in the last 12 months?
Frequent false alarms may indicate a system fault or configuration issue.
7. Are all detectors and devices on your system confirmed as functioning correctly?
8. If you have an access control system, has the fire alarm interface been tested within the last 12 months?
If you do not have an access control system, select 'Not applicable'.
9. If you have a CCTV system, has the recording function been verified within the last 12 months?
If you do not have a CCTV system, select 'Not applicable'.
10. Do you know the Grade of your intruder alarm system (e.g. Grade 2 or Grade 3)?
If unsure, SPS Technical can confirm the grade during a system review.

This tool provides an initial indication only. Results are based on the information you have provided and recognised industry standards. They are not a substitute for a site-specific technical assessment, insurer advice or formal compliance review. Maintenance requirements may vary depending on system type, site conditions, monitoring arrangements, certification status and insurer requirements. SPS Technical can confirm the correct requirements following a review of your system.
What System Health Means
System health is a broad measure of whether your fire and security systems appear to be working, maintained, monitored and documented. A healthy system is one that is likely to perform as intended when it is needed.
The assessment covers fire alarms, intruder alarms, CCTV, access control, monitoring and maintenance. It is not a technical inspection — it is a structured self-check that highlights where a professional review may be worthwhile.
How Your Answers Influence the Result
Each answer contributes to an overall score. Positive answers (evidence of servicing, working systems, current records) increase the score, while negative answers lower it.
“Not sure” answers reduce the confidence of the assessment rather than being treated automatically as a failure. The tool also raises advisory notes where specific risks are indicated — for example, possible PSTN signalling risk or outstanding remedial actions.
What to Do After Receiving Your Result
If your result is green, maintain your current maintenance schedule and arrange a review if any flags were raised. If amber, SPS Technical can help identify and address gaps. If red, contact SPS Technical as soon as possible.
See our maintenance and compliance services or request a system takeover review.
System Health Self-Assessment FAQs
Which systems does the assessment cover?
Fire alarms, intruder alarms, CCTV, access control, monitoring and maintenance — across commercial premises.
Why do “not sure” answers matter?
They reduce confidence rather than causing a fail. If you are unsure about key facts such as servicing or alarm grade, SPS Technical can confirm them during a review.
Does a green score mean I am fully compliant?
No. It indicates your systems appear broadly in order based on your answers. Compliance still depends on certification, documentation and site-specific requirements.
Can SPS Technical review the results?
Yes. After completing the assessment you can request a professional system review.
Want a Professional to Verify Your Findings?
