Client requirement

An occupied community facility needed a reliable way to manage access and verify visitors at its entrances. The brief called for a coordinated door-entry and access-control arrangement that staff could operate while the building continued providing its normal services.

Operational challenge

The installation had to be completed in a building that remained in use. Public access and service continuity needed to be considered alongside the work on entrance equipment and cabling. The team therefore planned work areas and access arrangements with the site managers rather than relying on a full building closure.

Working environment: An occupied community facility providing ongoing services.

The SPS Technical solution

The SPS technical systems team installed Paxton Entry IP door-entry equipment with audio handsets and associated access-control hardware. The installation combined entrance panels, control units, locking equipment and authorised exit devices with the necessary cabling. Audio handsets supported staff communication with visitors, while the wider system provided a coordinated means of managing entry.

Key outcome: The facility gained a coordinated entry-management system, delivered with staff training and without disruption to services as recorded in the project summary.

  • Door Entry

Products and manufacturers: Paxton Entry IP entrance panels, control units and audio handsets, with CDVI locking hardware and associated exit devices and cabling.

Delivery approach

The programme combined out-of-hours installation, phased access arrangements and protective screening. This allowed the team to fit entrance and communication equipment around the practical needs of an occupied facility.

Phasing: Works were completed out of hours and through phased access arrangements agreed with the site team.

Risk controls: Portable containment and protective screening were used to separate work and help shield occupants from noise and dust.

Stakeholder coordination: Security engineers and site managers coordinated the programme, particularly where work affected entrances or took place outside normal hours.

Disruption avoided: Out-of-hours work and phased access arrangements maintained service continuity.

Integration and compliance

Integrations: Door-entry communication and access-control equipment were brought together in the installation. The published summary does not disclose entrance locations, access credentials or detailed security settings.

Testing, training and handover

Training and handover: Staff training covered system administration and fob management, helping the site team take over day-to-day use of the completed installation.

Outcomes and client benefits

Client benefit: Staff gained a practical system for managing entry and communicating with visitors, with training to support its ongoing day-to-day operation.

  • A coordinated door-entry and access-control installation for an occupied community building.
  • Staff training in administration and fob management completed.
  • No disruption to services reported in the project summary.
  • Delivery on time and within the agreed budget, without publishing the project value.

Lessons learned

  • Agree work and access arrangements with site managers before installation, particularly for occupied community buildings.
  • Choose the entry-communication arrangement around how staff will use it, rather than adding unnecessary complexity.
