# Fire Alarm Health, Testing & Readiness Check

A fire alarm panel showing a normal display does not necessarily mean every part of the system is operating, being tested or being properly managed. This free assessment reviews routine testing, professional servicing, visible faults, documentation, false alarms, monitoring and changes to your premises.

The result is an indicative assessment based on the information provided. It does not replace a fire risk assessment or a competent fire alarm inspection and does not certify compliance with BS 5839-1.

About this tool

The SPS Technical Fire Alarm Health Check is a free online assessment for commercial organisations. It asks non-technical questions about responsibility and records, panel condition, weekly testing, professional servicing, building changes, false alarms and monitoring and response to produce an indicative readiness score, critical findings and recommended next steps. It does not certify legal compliance, confirm conformity with BS 5839-1, determine the required system category, or replace a professional fire alarm inspection or fire risk assessment.

Designed for Responsible Persons, facilities managers, estates teams, school managers, care-sector managers and business owners. SPS Technical provides commercial fire and security design, installation, maintenance and monitoring across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the Humber.

This assessment reviews six areas:

Responsibility and records Panel condition and weekly testing Professional servicing Building changes and visible condition False-alarm management Monitoring and response

Takes around 5–8 minutes

## Start Your Free Fire Alarm Health Check

This assessment is based on the information supplied and is indicative only. It does not certify legal compliance, confirm conformity with BS 5839-1, determine the required system category, or replace a professional fire alarm inspection or fire risk assessment. Conclusions about coverage, category, audibility, device siting or system design must be confirmed by a competent professional review.

This tool provides an initial indication only. Results are based on the information you have provided and recognised industry standards. They are not a substitute for a site-specific technical assessment, insurer advice or formal compliance review. Maintenance requirements may vary depending on system type, site conditions, monitoring arrangements, certification status and insurer requirements. SPS Technical can confirm the correct requirements following a review of your system.

## What Does the Fire Alarm Health Check Assess?

The assessment reviews six connected areas of fire alarm management. Each area receives its own score and explanation in your results.

### Responsibility and records

Reviews whether a Responsible Person is identified, a current fire risk assessment exists, an emergency plan is documented and weekly tests and servicing are recorded.

### Panel condition and weekly testing

Asks you to observe the front of the panel and confirm routine weekly testing using different manual call points.

### Professional servicing

Considers when the system was last professionally serviced, whether a contract is in place and whether engineer recommendations remain open.

### Building changes and visible condition

Looks for layout or occupancy changes, and any visibly damaged, obstructed or painted devices.

### False-alarm management

Reviews whether unwanted alarms are occurring, being recorded and investigated, and whether any detector has been disabled.

### Monitoring and response

Checks Alarm Receiving Centre monitoring, signalling, keyholders and whether staff know how to respond.

## What Is a Fire Alarm Health Check?

A fire alarm health check is a structured review of whether basic fire alarm management, testing and maintenance activities appear to be taking place and whether there are warning signs that require professional investigation.

A panel showing a normal display does not necessarily mean every part of the system is operating, being tested or being properly managed. Faults can remain hidden, weekly tests may be inconsistent, records may be incomplete, and changes to the building may have affected the system.

This free assessment reviews routine testing, professional servicing, visible faults, documentation, false alarms, monitoring and changes to your premises. It provides an immediate, indicative result and practical next steps. For ongoing upkeep, see our [fire alarm maintenance](/services/fire-alarms/maintenance).

What the Tool Can and Cannot Do

The tool can help you:

- review whether routine testing appears to be happening
- check whether records and documentation exist
- flag visible panel faults or disablements
- highlight overdue or missing servicing
- identify unreviewed building changes
- spot false-alarm and monitoring gaps
- decide whether to arrange a professional review

The tool does not:

- replace a fire risk assessment
- replace a competent fire alarm inspection
- verify system design or coverage
- confirm certification against BS 5839-1
- confirm the required system category
- assess audibility or cause-and-effect
- provide legal advice

Conclusions about coverage, category, audibility, device siting or system design must be reserved for competent professional review.

## When Should You Arrange a Professional Fire Alarm Review?

Any of the following suggests a professional review is worthwhile:

The panel is showing a fault or disablement

A detector or zone has been disabled

Weekly tests are not consistently recorded

There is no current fire risk assessment

The system was last serviced over 12 months ago

Engineer recommendations remain outstanding

The building layout or use has changed and the alarm was not reviewed

Repeated false alarms are not being investigated

Keyholder details may be out of date

Staff are unsure what to do when the alarm activates

People sleep at the premises and response arrangements are unclear

Recognise any of these issues?

[Request a Fire Alarm Review](/?section=contact)

How Is the Readiness Score Calculated?

The result combines six separate areas: responsibility and records, panel condition and weekly testing, professional servicing, building changes, false-alarm management, and monitoring and response.

Each section receives its own score. Critical issues — such as a panel fault, an unexplained disablement, a disabled detector or an unavailable system — are highlighted separately and can override an otherwise positive average.

Unknown answers reduce the confidence of the assessment rather than being treated automatically as a failure.

The result should be used as a starting point for further investigation, not as a certificate of condition or compliance.

What Does Routine Fire Alarm Testing Involve?

Accessible government guidance for offices and shops states that control equipment should be checked for faults, fire-warning systems should be tested weekly, and successive tests should use different manual call points. Testing and maintenance should be carried out by a competent person.

This tool paraphrases that guidance in plain English. It asks whether weekly testing is happening, whether a different call point is used each time, and whether tests are recorded — without requiring you to open the panel or perform any technical procedure.

Which Standards Does This Relate To?

BS 5839-1 is the BSI code of practice covering the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in non-domestic premises. BSI makes clear that it is a code of practice for professionals and does not itself determine whether a particular building must have a fire alarm system.

This tool does not reproduce any British Standard clauses. All questions and guidance use original SPS Technical wording. Any conclusion about coverage, category or design must be confirmed by a competent professional review.

## Why Choose SPS Technical for Fire Alarm Reviews?

SPS Technical designs, installs, maintains and monitors commercial fire alarm systems across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the Humber.

Our approach looks at the complete operational picture — testing, servicing, records, monitoring and the effect of building changes — rather than simply confirming that a panel displays a normal condition.

Where this online health check identifies a concern, SPS Technical can provide a professional review and explain the available remedial options.

Fire Alarm Health Check FAQs

### Is the Fire Alarm Health Check free?

Yes. The online assessment is free to complete and provides an immediate indicative result.

### Do I need to be a fire alarm engineer?

No. The questions are written for Responsible Persons, facilities managers, estates teams and business owners. Where information is unavailable, select “I don’t know”.

### Will the tool ask me to open the panel or test batteries?

No. You are only asked to observe the front of the panel. Never open the panel, isolate circuits, remove covers or access engineer menus.

### Does the result say whether I am compliant?

No. The result never uses “compliant” or “non-compliant”. It gives an indicative readiness score and highlights where professional review is recommended.

### Does the tool replace a fire risk assessment?

No. A fire risk assessment is a separate legal requirement. This tool helps you review whether basic fire alarm management, testing and maintenance are taking place.

### How often should a fire alarm be serviced?

The suitable frequency depends on the system category, risk and contractual requirements. The tool flags where servicing appears overdue and recommends professional confirmation.

### Will I have to give my contact details to see the result?

No. Your result is shown without any contact details. You can optionally request a professional review afterwards.
