# Fire Alarm False Alarm Management — Root Cause Investigation, Not Temporary Resets

Persistent nuisance alarms investigated, diagnosed and resolved by FIA-trained engineers to BS 5839-1 requirements.

Persistent fire alarm false alarms are more than a nuisance. They erode confidence in the system, desensitise staff to real alarms, generate fire service attendance charges and — under the NPCC Unwanted Fire Signals policy — risk removal of automatic fire brigade response. The root cause of almost every false alarm is a design, installation or maintenance problem that can be identified and resolved. SPS Technical's FIA-trained engineers investigate, diagnose and fix the underlying cause — not just reset the panel.

## How False Alarms Escalate

A single false alarm is an inconvenience. A persistent pattern is a serious safety and commercial risk. Staff who have evacuated unnecessarily multiple times begin to hesitate or ignore alarms — which is precisely the behaviour that costs lives in a real fire. Understanding and interrupting the escalation pattern is the first step in resolving a persistent false alarm problem.

Persistent false alarms are more than a nuisance. They erode confidence in the system, desensitise staff to real alarms, risk removal of fire service response under the NPCC Unwanted Fire Signals policy, and generate attendance charges from the fire service. They almost always indicate a design, installation or maintenance problem — not an inevitable feature of a fire alarm system.

### Fire service response at risk

Premises with persistent false alarms can have automatic fire brigade response withdrawn

### Staff desensitisation

Repeated false alarms cause staff to ignore or delay evacuation on real activations

### Attendance charges

Fire services charge for repeated attendance at premises with persistent false alarms

How false alarms escalate

## The False Alarm Escalation Chain

Left unaddressed, persistent false alarms follow a predictable and costly pattern.

01

Wrong detector type or placement

02

Nuisance alarm activates

03

Staff ignore or delay evacuation

04

Fire service attends

05

Response withdrawal risk

**SPS Technical interrupts this chain at the source** — identifying and resolving the root cause rather than resetting the system and hoping for the best.

Root causes

## Why Fire Alarm False Alarms Happen

False alarms are almost always caused by the wrong detector in the wrong environment, poor detector placement, sensitivity drift from accumulated contamination, or a system that hasn't been reconfigured following a change in building use. Each of these has a specific technical solution — and each requires investigation rather than guesswork.

### Wrong detector type

Ionisation detectors near kitchens, optical detectors in dusty environments, steam detectors near showers

### Poor detector placement

Too close to air conditioning outlets, cooking equipment or high-traffic dust sources

### Sensitivity drift

Detectors accumulating contamination over time, lowering the activation threshold

### Building use changes

System designed for an office now used as a workshop, kitchen or storage area

### Configuration errors

Cause-and-effect not matched to the building's evacuation strategy

### Environmental factors

Steam, dust, fumes or insects triggering detectors not rated for the environment

Our approach

## How We Investigate and Resolve Fire Alarm False Alarms

SPS Technical's false alarm investigation service begins with a thorough review of the panel event log and alarm history. Our FIA-trained engineers then inspect the affected areas, assess detector types and placement, review cause-and-effect configuration and identify the specific root cause. Remediation is agreed and costed before any work begins, and a 90-day monitoring period follows to confirm the problem has been resolved.

1

### Alarm History Review

Panel event log and alarm history analysed. Frequency, timing, zones and device types mapped.

2

### Site Inspection

FIA-trained engineer inspects affected detectors, reviews placement, environmental conditions and configuration.

3

### Root Cause Identification

Specific cause identified — detector type, placement, sensitivity, environment or system configuration.

4

### Remediation

Detector replacement, repositioning, sensitivity adjustment, re-zoning or cause-and-effect reconfiguration carried out.

5

### Verification

Full cause-and-effect test post-remediation. 90-day monitoring period. Confirmation that false alarm rate has reduced.

## NPCC Unwanted Fire Signals Policy

Under the National Police Chiefs' Council Unwanted Fire Signals policy, premises with persistent false alarms can have automatic fire brigade attendance withdrawn. Once response is removed, reinstatement requires a formal application and evidence that the root cause has been identified and resolved. SPS Technical's false alarm investigation service produces documented evidence of root cause analysis and remediation — supporting any reinstatement application if response has already been withdrawn.
