# BS 9263: intruder alarm commissioning and maintenance, explained

Reviewed by the SPS Technical team · Last checked 12 October 2026

## Quick answer

BS 9263:2016 is the British Standard for commissioning, maintaining and remotely supporting intruder and hold-up alarm systems. It sets what a maintenance visit must cover and how often visits are due: at least once a year for a bells-only system, and usually twice a year for a system that signals to an alarm receiving centre.

## What it means for you

- Book at least one maintenance visit a year for a bells-only alarm.
- Expect two visits a year for a monitored alarm, unless your provider uses approved remote support for one of them.
- Make sure each visit checks detectors, batteries, signalling and the log, and that you get a written record.
- Keep the system log up to date so false alarms can be traced and fixed.

## Who it applies to

Owners of intruder and hold-up alarm systems and the companies that commission and maintain them.

## Common questions

How often should an intruder alarm be serviced?

At least once a year if it only sounds a bell on site. Monitored alarms that signal to an alarm receiving centre usually need two visits a year, and this is also a condition of police response.

What is remote support?

Remote support lets a certified engineer connect to the panel to check status or make changes without a site visit. BS 9263 sets the security and record-keeping rules for doing this.
